Emily’s August Book Review

I love to read! I listen to books all day long! They keep me busy and sometimes take me to another world. I had years as a mother where I didn’t pick up a single book. About five years ago, I found audiobooks and it has been a complete life changer for me. I feel connected, educated, and full of imagination. Here are the books I read this month.

“The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion” by Beth Brower Audiobook for Volume 1-3

Who hasn’t read this series? Emma is a charming, free spirited girl living a little on the edge of society norms. The series is delightful and will make you wish you were a part of their friend circle. Well Beth Brower, the author has begun releasing the audio version of her books. They are being released almost weekly but for now only the first 3 volumes are available. If you love a good period drama, enjoy a little laugh and are looking for a new friend, Emma Lion is it! 5 STARS

“One Perfect Couple” by Ruth Ware

If you’ve read Ruth Ware, you must love a good mystery. She is brilliant in her ability to set the stage. This one was a quick check out from the library but got me hooked pretty quick. Imagine your boyfriend telling you he signed you up for a reality tv show. Couples move to the isolated island and see if they are really compatible and if not look for someone who is. Everything was to be filmed and the more drama the better. When Lyla, a very level-headed scientist went to the island with her actor boyfriend Nico, her plan was to get off the island as soon as possible. Little does she know what lies ahead. Death, destruction, and a game that was nothing like what they signed up for. This was not my favorite of her books. 3 STARS

“The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue” by V.E. Schwab

Addie, a young French woman makes a bargain for freedom and immortality. In return she is cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets. The story follows Addie across centuries and throughout the world where she tries to leave her mark. Is that even possible if she is to be forgotten? Read to find what she chooses to do with her time and how she was able to leave a mark. 3.5 STARS

“First Time Caller” by B.K. Borison

This cute Rom-com book gave me total Sleepless in Seattle vibes. A 12 year old girl calls into a radio show looking to help her mom find love. Little did she know the process would be just what she needed. It is charming, you’ll love the characters! It is one of those books that you are hoping for the predictable ending the entire book. 4 STARS

“Atmosphere” by Taylor Jenkins Reid

It is the most delightful read! I’ve never read anything like it. Joan Goodwin has been obsessed with stars for as long as she can remember. When she comes across an advertisement inviting women to join NASA’s Space Shuttle Program, her life could change. It is literally her dream come true.

Read how she manages to enter this unique career, and the relationships and connections she makes in the process. It will make you wonder, believe and hope for better things to come. I gave it 5 STARS.

“Little Women” by Louisa May Alcott

We planned a trip to Boston and had to visit Concord to see the Little Orchard House, the home of Louisa May Alcott. Our whole family loves the book and movie. It was such a charming place with so much history. Louisa actually wrote Little Women inside the home. It was fun to learn about little details about her own family that she included in the book. She was an instant success upon writing the book and has inspired many since. Although the home was inspiration for the movies, only the school room out back was included in the latest version.  All other movies are shot in replica homes. If you want a good read and love independent women, this book should be on your yearly read list! One of my all time favorites! 5 STARS

“P.S. I Hate You” by Lauren Connolly

This is a bittersweet romantic comedy. Maggie, a grieving sister, is given different tasks to distribute her adventuresome brother’s ashes to eight different locations. Little did she expect to have to do it with her brother’s best friend who broke her heart many years ago. At each location they receive a letter from the deceased brother and a task to complete. It takes some time but they unpack their complicated past and learn so much in the journey. It is a tender reminder of love and loss but will leave you hopeful in the end.

“Done and Dusted” by Lyla Sage

This was a first for me! Cowboy romance was really cute. Emmy Ryder, a barrel racer, returns home after an accident that ends her riding career. The only problem, no one knows why she is back. Because of the accident, she is hesitant around her horse but Luke Brooks, her brother’s best friend and the notorious town bachelor may be just the person she needs. Watch how they help one another through the loads they are carrying and find love in the middle.  4 STARS
