Let’s be honest—finding time to work out as a parent is like trying to drink a cup of coffee while it’s still hot. Nearly impossible. Between school drop-offs, work, kids’ activities, and pretending the laundry will fold itself, squeezing in a workout can feel like a luxury. That’s why having a home gym has been a game-changer for us. We didn’t build it overnight (because, let’s face it, kids are expensive), but over time, we’ve added pieces that make workouts efficient, effective, and—dare I say it?—actually enjoyable.
Here’s what’s in our home gym and why it works for our busy lives.
The Core of Our Setup
Peloton Tread+
A treadmill that doesn’t feel like punishment? Yes, please. The Peloton Tread+ has been one of our best investments. Whether it’s a 20-minute HIIT run before the kids wake up or a longer session when schedules allow, the on-demand classes keep things interesting. Plus, the leaderboard taps into my competitive side—because if I can’t outrun a random user named “SpeedyDad47,” what am I even doing? (if you want to connect, my user name is themoderndad…shocking I know!)
Peloton Bike+
For those days when running feels like too much effort (or when the weather is doing its best impression of a disaster movie), the Peloton Bike+ is our go-to. It’s great for quick rides or long endurance sessions, and the classes make cycling way more fun than just pedaling in place while staring at the wall.
Peloton Guide
Strength training has never been easier thanks to the Peloton Guide. It helps track movements and ensures I’m not just going through the motions. If you’ve ever done a workout where your arms feel like they might fall off but you’re still unsure if you did it right—this helps with that.
Strength Training Staples
Dumbbells
You can never go wrong with a good set of dumbbells. We’ve collected a range of weights over the years, which means we can switch things up depending on the workout. Also, they make great obstacles for kids to trip over when they wander into the gym mid-workout (bonus: an unplanned agility drill for us).
Adjustable Bench
The adjustable bench makes strength workouts so much more versatile. Whether it’s chest presses, Bulgarian split squats, or just a place to collapse between sets, this bench earns its spot in our gym.
Kettlebells
Nothing makes you feel stronger than swinging around a kettlebell like a Viking warrior. These are perfect for explosive movements and full-body workouts—ideal when time is short but you still want to feel like a beast.
Weighted Vest
A weighted vest is the sneaky way to make any workout harder. Walks, push-ups, squats—it levels up everything. Plus, if I wear it around the house, I feel like I’m training for a superhero role (or just carrying around a very heavy toddler).
Recovery & Mobility Must-Haves
Yoga Mats
Because sometimes you just need to stretch, breathe, or—let’s be real—lie down for a few minutes.
Foam Roller & Chirp Roller
Sore muscles are a given when you’re juggling workouts and parenting. The foam roller is great for overall recovery, while the Chirp roller is my go-to for back relief after a long day of chasing kids.
Bosu Ball
Balance training? Core work? Trying to stand on it while my kids throw balls at me for fun? The Bosu ball keeps things interesting.
Ab Roller
A tool that makes my abs burn in the best way possible. Simple, effective, and a reminder that my core strength is still a work in progress.
The Extras That Make a Big Difference
Hisense TV
Having a TV in the gym means I can follow workouts, watch sports while lifting, or put on a show for the kids so they stay entertained while I squeeze in some exercise.
Shaker Plate
This one is a bit of a wild card, but the shaker plate helps with recovery, balance, and muscle activation. Plus, it makes me feel like I’m in a futuristic gym.
Basket (a.k.a. The Organized Chaos Holder)
Let’s be honest—without a designated place for bands, straps, and other random gym accessories, they’d be lost forever. The basket is where all those little things go so I can pretend to be organized.
Why a Home Gym Works for Us
- Convenience – No commute, no waiting for equipment, no excuses.
- Time-saving – Short workouts still count, and every minute matters.
- Flexibility – Early morning, late night, in-between carpool? It’s always open.
- Family-friendly – The kids see us prioritizing fitness, and sometimes, they even join in.
We built this space over time, adding pieces that made sense for us. If you’re thinking about starting a home gym, don’t stress about getting everything at once. Start with what you’ll use the most, and build from there.
And if you ever need motivation, just remember: the laundry can wait—your health is worth it.
