Spring is finally (hopefully) here! After what feels like an eternity of being trapped inside, my kids are bouncing off the walls—literally. We’ve exhausted every indoor activity, and if I have to build one more LEGO set, I might just lose it. But with the sun peeking out (even if Utah insists on throwing in a snowstorm every other day), it’s time to shake off those winter blues and get outside.
One thing I’ve learned as a dad of four (ages 11, 9, 7, and 5) is that kids have unlimited energy, and if I don’t direct that energy somewhere, chaos ensues. So, to keep everyone sane, I’ve put together a list of fun, family-friendly springtime activities.
Why It’s Important to Get Kids Active in the Spring
Winter hibernation is real. After months of bundling up, dodging sickness, and keeping the kids entertained indoors, getting outside is essential for everyone’s sanity. Here’s why:
- Boosts Mood – Sunlight equals vitamin D, which means happier, less grumpy kids (and parents).
- Improves Health – Fresh air, movement, and play all contribute to better physical health.
- Breaks Screen Time Habits – Let’s be honest, winter means more screen time. Spring is the perfect time to reset those habits.
- Encourages Creativity – Outdoor play sparks imagination and problem-solving skills.
So, what can we do to make the most of the (hopefully) warm days ahead? Here are some of our favorite hobbies and activities to get the whole family moving!
1. Gardening: Growing More Than Just Plants
Gardening is a great way to teach kids responsibility while also tricking them into spending more time outside. Have them help with:
- Picking out plants
- Digging holes and planting
- Watering and weeding
Plus, they’ll take pride in seeing their hard work grow—literally!
2. Hiking: The Ultimate Energy Burner
If your kids have boundless energy, hiking is a must. We have some great trails nearby, and the best part? The kids are so tired by the end. Pro tip:
- Check the weather first—nobody likes a surprise rainstorm.
- Pack all the snacks. A hungry kid is a cranky kid.
- Let the kids take turns being the “leader” on the trail to keep them engaged.
3. Pickleball: The Sport Everyone Can Play
Pickleball has taken over the world, and for good reason! It’s easy to learn and fun for all ages. Even our 5-year-old can rally with us! We love using these paddles and net:
4. Spikeball: Competitive Fun for Any Space
Spikeball is fast, fun, and perfect for any backyard, beach, or park outing. We take ours everywhere!
5. Ninja Course: Turning the Backyard Into an Obstacle Course
If your kids love to climb, jump, and swing (basically every kid ever), a ninja course is a great investment. It helps with strength, coordination, and gives them a way to burn energy outside.
6. Fairy Gardens: A Magical Hobby for the Creative Kids
Our girls love fairy gardens. They spend hours outside setting up their little magical worlds, rearranging everything daily. If you have kids who love imaginary play, this is a great way to keep them engaged outdoors.
7. Paddle Smash: Pickleball Meets Spikeball
If you love both Pickleball and Spikeball, you’ll love Paddle Smash! It’s a fast-paced, exciting game that keeps everyone moving.
8. Rocket Launchers: The Lazy Dad’s Dream Activity
Want to get your kids outside without expending your own energy? Rocket launchers. Seriously. They’ll run back and forth launching rockets while you supervise from the comfort of your chair.
9. Croquet: Bring Back the Classics
Croquet is an underrated, low-energy game that’s perfect for a relaxing afternoon in the yard. Plus, it just feels fancy.
10. Biking: The Ultimate Family Adventure
We love biking as a family. Whether it’s a quick ride around the block or a full-day adventure, it’s a fun way to explore and stay active. We’re especially obsessed with our Madsen bike—perfect for carting kids around!
Spring Is Here (Hopefully) – Let’s Get Outside!
While Utah might still throw in a snowstorm or two, I’m choosing to believe that spring is right around the corner. We’re more than ready to trade screen time for sunshine and make some fun memories outside.
What’s your family’s favorite spring activity? Let me know in the comments! And if you have a tried-and-true way to make the snow disappear faster, I’m all ears.
