Finding Joy in the Little Things: A Reflection on Favorite Things

As the year starts we all have goals we are trying to hit resolutions that are making us busier, but there’s something wonderfully grounding about taking a moment to reflect on your favorite things. Not the big milestones or life-changing events—but the small, comforting details that bring joy, often unnoticed in the everyday shuffle.

Whether it’s the smell of fresh rain in the morning, the sound of birds singing out the window, or a cozy blanket on a chilly night, these tiny pleasures have a way of anchoring us. They’re personal, often simple, and always meaningful.

Why Favorite Things Matter

In a world that moves fast and demands more each day, favorite things are gentle reminders of what we truly love. They give us a moment to breathe, to reconnect, to remember who we are when we’re not busy being productive.

They don’t have to be extravagant. In fact, the best ones rarely are. A favorite book, a pair of worn-in jeans, a certain song at just the right time—they carry memories, emotions, and a sense of home.

Some of My Favorite Things

So in the spirit of sharing, here are a few of my own favorite things:

1. Morning Light Through the Windows
There’s something magical about the way early sunlight filters in—soft, golden, and full of promise. I open every curtain the minute the sun pops out! It fills our home with a warmth that immediately brightens every corner of our home.

2. Handwritten Notes
Emails are convenient, but nothing beats the charm of someone’s handwriting on paper. It feels real, tangible, personal. I love giving them but I cherish the ones I receive!

3. The First Bite of Something Freshly Baked
That warm, fragrant moment when you taste something straight from the oven—whether it’s cookies, bread, or cake—is pure joy. Ever since Jason has been making bread, we fight over the first slice of his warm bread. Although we eat the whole loaf, nothing is better than the first slice!

4. Books That Feel Like Old Friends
There are books you read once, and there are books you return to like a favorite song. They know your heart. Little Women is that for me! I return to it over and over again.

5. Laughing Until You Cry
Those moments of uncontrollable laughter, where your cheeks hurt and the world feels lighter? Absolutely priceless. What’s even better is when it happens with your kids. Laughing together is one of our favorite past times.

Create Your Own List

What are your favorite things? As the world gets busier and busier taking time to write them down can be a quiet act of gratitude—a way to ground yourself when life feels a bit too much.

Here are a few prompts to get you started:

  • What’s something that always makes you smile?

  • What’s a smell that instantly brings back a good memory?

  • What’s a simple ritual you look forward to each day?

You might be surprised by how many small joys you carry with you.

Final Thoughts

Favorite things aren’t about possessions or status. They’re about presence—those moments when we’re fully connected to what we love. They remind us that joy isn’t something we chase; it’s something we notice. As you take time to notice these small and simple things this year don’t forget to express thanks whenever you notice them!
