Emily’s July Book Review

July Book Review

The Lying Game by Ruth Ware

Have you read a book from Ruth Ware? She is all about the mystery. The Lying Game is about a group of school girls and their silly game of lying. Watch what happens when their game goes too far and they have to carry the weight of their lies for years. The girls reconnect and learn that what they thought was the truth may have actually been a lie. I gave this one 4 stars.

Swan Song by Elin Hilderbrand

If you are into summer books in Nantucket, then add this one to your reading list. There is a new couple in town shaking up all the social activities. Little did anyone know that this 22 million dollar home bought by the Richardsons, the new couple would soon burn to the ground and pull many of the neighbors into the investigation. It is unpredictable and a little fun to get a glimpse into Nantucket life. I gave this one 3 stars.

The Third Gilmore Girl by Kelly Bishop

This book was not what I expected! I went into it thinking it would be heavily Gilmore Girls but found it was more of a life memoir. Kelly Bishop had a fascinating life! She began her career as a dancer and was one of the originals in A Chorus Line. Her career was an adventure and I loved learning about where she came from.

She did talk about Gilmore Girls and made my day when she said she was team Logan because he is my favorite. I honestly wanted to rewatch the show, knowing what I know now about her. It was delightful. I gave this book 4 stars.

Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid

This was my favorite read this month! I’ve never read anything like it. Joan Goodwin has been obsessed with the stars for as long as she can remember. When she comes across an advertisement inviting women to join NASA’s space shuttle program, her life could change. It is literally her dream come true.

Read how she managed to enter this unique career and the relationships/connections she makes in the process. It will make wonder, believe, and hope for better things to come. I gave this one 5 stars.

Just One of the Guys by Kristan Higgins

Chastity O’Neil is a journalist who excels in height and comes from a family of firefighters. Watch how she enlists in looking for love and learns a little about who she is in the process. It will make you believe in young love and giggle a little when she starts looking for love with her divorced mother. I gave this one 4 stars.

Broken Country by Clare Leslie Hall

This book has been circling the internet as one of people’s favorites for the year. I finally got a hold of it and finished. I didn’t love it because I have a hard time with infidelity but it has left me thinking more than any other book. Beth and her kind husband Frank are happily married and live on a farm in the country. The book will take you back to Beth’s past with a young love affair with Gabriel. It also explores the present day of a trial. Many details leave you hanging or grasping for details but in the end you will be left in awe of the love she shares. It gave me To Kill A Mocking Bird vibe. I gave this one 5 stars and will read it again knowing what I learned after finishing it.

Summer Romance by Annabel Monaghan

After Ali’s life felt like it was falling apart, her mom died, her husband left, and her home is a mess. She met someone at a dog park. Could he be just the thing she needs to get her life back together? She starts small, wearing pants, cleaning her house, getting a job and by the end of the book she will be a completely different person. I loved the predictability of the story line and of course the happy ending. I gave this one 4 stars. If you liked this one, you’ll love It’s a Love Story by the same author.

The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley

If you like a mystery, then Lucy Foley is the author for you! Jess needs a fresh start and heads to Paris to meet her brother. When she arrives, her brother is no where to be found. Watch as she goes on the hunt to discover his whereabouts. It is suspenseful and full of twists and turns. I gave this one 4 stars.

The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ

A few years ago a friend challenged me to read the Book of Mormon during the month of July. I’ve done it every year since and it has changed my life! I love reading how God showed up in the lives of the people in the book but I love watching how he shows up in my life too. It is a blessing to witness Jesus Christ minister to the people in America. His love and care of each individual is life changing. If you haven’t read it or need a little help getting started, here are a few reading guides that will help you stay on it. It will change your life. I give this one 5 stars!
