Back‑to‑school season sneaks up fast, and suddenly you’re standing there wondering what on earth to give the person who’s about to spend the next nine months teaching, guiding, and occasionally refereeing your kid. As a dad, I’m all about gifts that are actually useful — and I saw all the gifts Emily got that didn’t get used when she was teaching. Teachers don’t need more clutter; they need support. So here are the simple, practical, genuinely appreciated gifts that make their lives easier and start the school year on the right foot.
1. Classroom Wish List Gift
If the teacher has an Amazon or classroom wish list, grab something from it. You know you’re getting something they actually need.
If they don’t have a wish list, grab your kid’s favorite books for the classroom.
2. Teacher Survival Kit
Put together a little bag with:
- Favorite candy
- Gum
- Hand lotion
- Pens
- Lip Balm
- $10 gift card
3. Classroom Supplies They’ll Actually Use
Make it fun rather than just handing over a pack of pencils:
- Flair pens
- Fun sticky notes
- Sharpies
- Cute notepads
- Stamps
- Stickers
- Dry-erase markers
4. Snack Basket
Fill a basket or small bin with individually packaged snacks, protein bars, candy.
Basically: the teacher snack drawer, upgraded.
5. Coffee or Drink Gift
The first few weeks of school are crazy. Send a gift card to their favorite drink shop so they can grab something before work.
6. Classroom-Friendly Snacks
Teachers are always stocking up on snacks for their students, and having a stash ready to go can make a huge difference during those busy first weeks of school.
Think crackers, fruit snacks, pretzels, or anything easy to hand out when a kid forgets their snack or needs a little boost to stay focused.
It’s a simple, super helpful way to support the whole classroom–make sure to check on any classroom allergies before sending them.
7. Gift Card + Small Treat
If you run out of time, or are unsure what to get your teacher an gift card is always a win.
Everyone always has something in their cart that they are just waiting to get. This gives them the chance to get it without feeling guilty.
Pair it with their favorite treat for the perfect back-to-school gift.
8. Handwritten Note from Your Child
This will be the most meaningful. Have your child write why they’re excited to have the teacher or something they hope to learn this year.
9. Something to Match Their Classroom Theme
10. Restock Later
Sometimes I talk to the teacher and they say “I can’t think of anything.” If this is the case I make sure to do a restock later check in–ask again in a month, in November, after the Holidays what they need.
This is a great way to support your teachers when they’ve run out of Kleenex and all the dry-erase markers have gone dry.
My favorite Modern Dad approach
I’d skip the overly complicated Pinterest gift and do:
$15 gift card + favorite snack/drink + handwritten note from the kid.
It’s useful, doesn’t create clutter, and still feels thoughtful. Basically, give the teacher something they’ll actually want instead of another “Best Teacher Ever” mug. 😂
