The best part about being a parent is that you have this little person to play around with, spend the day and night with, and take on little fun adventures. But at what point do you say, “You know what? This little guy needs a sibling!”
When my wife and I were dating, there was this park behind her place that we would go to, sit on the cement bleachers, and talk about what our future together would be like. What our hope and dreams were, how we wanted to have a fun family where our kids would be friends with each other and everyone would want to be friends with them because of how amazing they were.
We would talk about how many we wanted. I have always wanted four. Growing up it was just me and my sister, we were three years apart, and anytime we would go on vacations and get in a fight it was over. There would be no one else to play with. But then you can’t have three kids because someone will always be left out at Disneyland (yes we go enough that this is an issue). So four was always the perfect amount. Not too big, and just so fun!
My wife grew up with four brothers, she was the only girl. She always wanted a sister, but as she’s matured she realized that boys are the best. They are her protectors and close in age that we are the bestest friends. We hang out with them more than any other friend.
So we decided that four would be a great number for us. But since we were older (in Utah time, 31 is old) starting our family, we wanted to get them out quick and close together. We want them to be best buddies.
I have a cousin with two little boys and they are about 19 months apart. They are best friends and it’s always so cute seeing them together. Every time I see them I think, “I can’t wait for when my son has a little buddy to play with all the time.” Just a sibling that can play pranks on me, build forts together, wrestle with each other, wear each others clothes, and giggle in their room till the wee hours of the night.
These are the things that I get excited about. So what does this all mean? No, we are not pregnant, but we are excited for the day when we know that number two is on their way.
