Being that summer is vastly approaching I figured that it was time for me to really work on my grilling skills. I can flip and burger like the next guy, and really, who can’t BBQ a hotdog? This summer though I want to take my BBQing skills to the next level. And what better time to do that than for Memorial Day!
I had heard that ribs are easy…but take a while to cook if you want them to be perfect. I am all about taking on a challenge and this was going to be no different. Only one big problem, I don’t have a BBQ. How am I going to BBQ ribs without a BBQ? Well, You can do ribs in your crockpot. Thank goodness!
Being that I have never bought ribs before I went to Walmart, walked to their meat department, and found some Farmland baby back pork ribs. These looked good and the price was great. Plus, there was a coupon that got me a dollar off Farmland/Smithfield baby back ribs or St. Louis style ribs, which made this purchase even better.
I was doing things I have never done before: shopping at Walmart for meat and using a coupon. Saving money and getting lots of great product? I could really get used to this.
I asked everyone and talked to everyone I knew, “How do I cook/BBQ ribs?” I asked the local grocery store and they said, “Just do it like you would a burger.” I felt like that wasn’t going to work because I know you want to cook them slowly making them stay juicy and moist. I checkout the site Ready Set Ribs, which gave great grilling tips from the BBQ pitmasters.
Thank goodness for Facebook and asking my friends what their favorite rib recipe is. Many of them got creative and said, “Just go to Chilis and buy some baby back ribs!” Ha ha ha…very funny. I figured I could take the suggestions that my friends had given me and create my own simple rib concoction.
I just took the ribs out, rubbed them down with some rib rub (I did two different kinds to see which I like better), put them in the crockpot, and added BBQ sauce. When measuring how much sauce to use just take half the weight of your ribs and that’s the amount of sauce. So for 4 lbs of ribs you would use 2 cups of sauce. You can use whatever sauce is your favorite.
Once you’ve cooked the ribs for 6-8 hours on low take them out of the crockpot. When I did this they crumbled in the tongs I was using, that’s how tender they were. I then took cookie sheets, lined them with foil, and put a cooling rack on them. Then I placed the meat on the rack, trying to keep it together as much as possible.
Finally I turned on the oven broiler and placed the ribs under it for 4 or 5 minutes. Just until the sauce had really settled in. Since I did two different rubs I added more sauce to one set of rib and not on the other, seeing if there would be a significant difference. They were both pretty much the same.
In the end they turned out to be a hit. Everyone loved them, they were super easy, and literally anyone can make them (BBQ or not).
yummmm!!! they look so good! You are an amazing little chef 😀
